Whether you sell fashion, electronics, white goods, food or any other type of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs), MSC understands that your consumers’ expectations have never been higher than they are today. FAQs About White Goods & Electronics?

What is the difference between white goods and household appliances?

While the term ‘white goods’ can sometimes refer to white fabrics, typically, when talking about shipping, ‘white goods’ are usually defined as large home appliances. These include stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, and air conditioners.

White goods are one of the main categories of household appliances. The other categories of household appliances include:

  • Consumer electronics (also known as brown goods) such a computers, radios, or games consoles.
  • Small appliances like toasters, coffee makers, and blenders.

How are white goods cargo best stored?

To avoid damage caused by damp weather radiation, contamination, or theft, household appliances should be securely stored inside a warehouse.

At MSC, our global network of cargo storage solutions helps ensure the smooth transportation of your white goods and consumer electronics from start to finish. Our dry storage warehousing network is designed to help you maximise efficiency throughout your supply chain and ensure your cargo remains undamaged during transportation.

How are household appliances packaged for transportation?

Because of their value and usefulness as a commodity, all white goods and consumer electronics shipments must be treated with care throughout their transportation journey.

Before shipping, household appliances are packaged in cartons manufactured from millboard, corrugated board, wooden, or plywood boxes using paperboard. Internally, all corners are covered using edge protectors and the cargo is surrounded by plastic materials (airbags, bubble wrap, or moldings) to protect against impact and avoid damage.

Any electronics or white goods that have scratch sensitive materials are further protected by plastic film, foam sheets, or tissue paper to further ensure that they arrive in good condition. Similarly, large appliances that will need to be manually handled during transportation are packaged into cartons that align with the appliance’s centre of gravity. This improves stability and prevents injury during handling.

Our teams of experts understand all the intricate details that come with packaging and shipping large electronics and white goods. We provide thorough checks throughout the packaging process to ensure that all packaging openings are completely closed, and your cargo is properly protected.

White goods and home appliances transportation best practices

When it comes to white goods and consumer electronics shipments, we are industry leaders. This is due to our commitment to following best practices throughout the transportation of your household appliance shipment. We use world-class dry shipping containers to ensure that your cargo arrives safely at its final destination and that your overall supply chain remains undisrupted.

Other best practice guidelines that must be followed when transporting white goods and consumer electronics include:

  • Performing surveys during the packing and unpacking stages and certificates issued.
  • Ensuring all cargo is secured (for example by interlocking stowage) in the area by the container door.
  • Protecting goods on all sides (floor, sides, top) with dunnage.
  • Suspending a nonwoven fabric in the container during shipments through various climatic regions to protect the cargo from dripping water or condensation.
  • Marking all cargo with the appropriate transport markings such as ‘handle with care’, ‘fragile’, ‘keep dry’ to ensure its safety.
